BASF Plant Science, Matthews Feed & Grain Sponsor Delaware County 4-H

July 16th, 2008 by Courtney Beck

BASF Plant Science and Matthews Feed and Grain have teamed up to sponsor the Delaware County 4-H, presenting the organization with a $2,000 check during the 2008 county fair livestock auction. The sponsorship furthers the commitment of BASF Plant Science and Matthews Feed and Grain to support local youth involved with livestock.

“BASF Plant Science is pleased to have the opportunity to partner with Matthews Feed and Grain to support Delaware County youth and their involvement with the livestock industry,” said Mike Jackson, NutriDense program manager. “Our commitment to Delaware County 4-H is an example of how our NutriDense sales team is involved with local agricultural community activities where we live and work. It is a way for us to help ensure the sustainability of agriculture through youth programs such as the Delaware County 4-H program.”

The money presented to the Delaware County 4-H will sponsor sandwiches and drinks for buyers during the auction and a portion of the meal for livestock auction buyers immediately following the sale.  The sale will take place on Wednesday, July 16 at 2:00 p.m. at the county fairgrounds.

“We are happy to support the Delaware County 4-H through our donation,” said Brantt Huston, feed sales manager of Matthews Feed and Grain in Matthews, Indiana. “Young people involved in agriculture are important to our local economy and are vital to the future of our industry.”

In December 2006, BASF Plant Science and Matthews Feed and Grain signed an agreement to allow the grain elevator to contract with area growers to grow hybrids carrying NutriDense traits and offer the resulting grain to its customers. Under the arrangement, growers who agree to bring their NutriDense grain to Matthews Feed and Grain receive a $0.25/bushel premium. Together, BASF Plant Science and Matthews Feed and Grain are providing higher profits for local corn growers, increased revenue for the elevator and more high-quality corn for pork producers. NutriDense elevates energy levels and provides higher overall protein content, allowing pork producers to reduce feed costs and gain feeding efficiencies enhancing their bottom line.
