Though this year’s harvest is barely complete, many growers are already thinking ahead to the next crop. Seed selection has become one of the most important input decisions, as selecting the right hybrid is crucial to an operation’s success. Here are some important things for growers to consider as they evaluate hybrids, courtesy of the Ohio State University Extension.
1. Select hybrids with maturity ratings appropriate for your geographic area or circumstances.
2. Choose hybrids with consistently high yields across a number of locations and/or over years.
3. Use hybrids with good standability.
4. Select hybrids with resistance and/or tolerance to stalk rots, foliar diseases and ear rots.
5. Plant hybrids of different maturity.
6. Plant only high quality seed with excellent emergence potential.
7. Choose hybrids which best match specific end uses.
8. Never purchase a hybrid without consulting performance data.
