Bunker Management

January 13th, 2010 by Courtney Beck

During the winter, managing the face of silage bunkers is essential.

Following is an excerpt from a recently published Utah State University Cooperative Extension paper entitled Chopping and Storing Quality Corn Silage: “Silo face management is important in managing aerobic deterioration in silage. Loose silage is more porous and allows greater air infiltration, increasing the rate of aerobic growth and growth of molds and yeasts. Maintaining a firm face and cleaning up loose silage that has fallen to the floor of the silo on feedout will help minimize aerobic losses. Keeping an even, clean face on bunker silos is an important management factor.”

NutriDense Grain and Schlapia Inc. Announce Contracting Opportunity

January 7th, 2010 by Courtney Beck

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, January 7, 2010 – BASF Plant Science is pleased to announce the addition of Schlapia Inc. to the list of companies now contracting for NutriDense Grain®. Schlapia, a family-owned grain mill, is committed to working with local farmers to enhance their profitability through NutriDense Grain.

“We are very interested in NutriDense Grain and look forward to seeing how it performs in this geography,” said Mark Schlapia, president of Schlapia Inc. “By accepting NutriDense Grain at our facility, we will be able to offer growers a premium contracting opportunity while providing optimal nutrition and enhancing animal feed performance.”

Through Schlapia’s convenient buyer’s call contracting, corn growers who plant NutriDense Grain will receive a per-bushel premium. Local delivery and online sign-up are also available. NutriDense hybrids are available in these areas through NutriDense licensed seed companies. For a list of these companies, visit www.nutridense.com/seed-partners.

“This program will provide the opportunity for many Iowa corn growers and animal producers to experience the benefits of NutriDense Grain,” said Scott Friedlund, NutriDense Grain product manager. “We appreciate the opportunity to add value to the local agricultural community and we look forward to a long, mutually beneficial relationship with Schlapia.”

NutriDense is a nutritionally enhanced corn that contains a stacked set of output traits designed to enhance animal feed performance.

For swine and poultry producers, corn hybrids containing NutriDense® Grain traits elevate ration energy content without adding fat, increase essential amino acid content and improve phosphorus availability. At the same time, NutriDense Grain reduces the amount of soybean meal in the ration, which increases digestibility. NutriDense Grain provides better animal nutrition that leads to greater profitability for producers.
