Sustainability and the dairy industry

December 8th, 2010 by Courtney Beck

Recently, the Dairy Network posted a video titled “Ag Report: Dairy’s Carbon Footprint and Sustainability.” The news report summarizes a recent study performed to determine how dairy producers are fostering environmental sustainability. The Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, which posted the video, included this description of the report:

In an effort to know what its carbon footprint is, the dairy industry funded a study of 500 dairy farms and 50 dairy processors nationwide. Kimberley Clauss, whose farm was included in the study, said the report looked at the entire dairy process from raising the feed for the cows, to transporting the end product to the grocery store.

A thank you note to farmers

December 1st, 2010 by Karlie Justus

Recently, Dairy Herd Network featured a great video that has been spreading quickly in the dairy community, just in time for the holiday season. The video interviews people in large cities and poses the question: Did you know this year, each American farm family will feed 155 people?

Here is some additional information from the video’s YouTube page:

Did you know this year, each American farm family will feed 155 people? Neither did consumers in many major U.S. cities. See their reactions to learning this fact — and then see how grateful they became for America’s farm families. This holiday season, don’t forget to thank America’s farmers.

We have been impressed with the passion and dedication of the entire agriculture industry’s agvocacy efforts, which we were able to see first-hand through our NutriDense Silage Web Moo.0 Contest. Watch the video below to see yet another example of this work, and be sure to tell a farmer thanks!

Perdue AgriBusiness, a leading merchandiser, processor and exporter of grain, is committed to working with local farmers to enhance their profitability through NutriDense Grain contracting.

“Over the past year, we have seen competitive yield results and positive feeding trials with NutriDense Grain,” said John Ade, Perdue AgriBusiness vice president of grain sales and merchandising. “By accepting NutriDense Grain at our facilities, we are able to offer growers a premium contracting opportunity while providing optimal nutrition and enhancing animal feed performance.”

As a result of the agreement with BASF Plant Science, corn growers delivering to the Perdue feed mills in Washington, Ind.; Livermore, Ky.; Bridgeville, Del.; and Roberts, Md. areas will have a strong local market for NutriDense Grain. NutriDense Grain contracts are available in these regions for fall delivery and buyer’s call through Perdue AgriBusiness.
