NutriDense is a nutritionally enhanced corn that contains a stacked set of output traits designed to enhance animal feed performance. Seed companies market the product through licensing agreements.

For swine and poultry producers, corn hybrids containing NutriDense Grain traits elevate ration energy content without adding fat, increase essential amino acid content and improve phosphorus availability. At the same time, NutriDense Grain reduces the amount of soybean meal in the ration, which increases digestibility. NutriDense Grain provides better animal nutrition that leads to greater profitability for producers. BASF Plant Science, Monsanto Enter into Development and Commercialization Agreement for NutriDense

December 9th, 2009 by Courtney Beck

Nutritionally-Enhanced Corn Hybrids To Benefit Animal Producers And Corn Growers; Genuity™ VT Triple PRO™ and Roundup Ready® Expected To Launch in 2010; Genuity™ SmartStax™ Hybrids in 2011

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC, and ST. LOUIS, December 9, 2009 – BASF Plant Science and Monsanto today announced the signing of an agreement to develop and commercialize new corn hybrids with better nutrition for animal feed.

The new hybrids will contain BASF’s NutriDense traits that are designed to enhance animal feed performance. NutriDense corn has higher levels of essential amino acids and energy, greater phosphorous availability and is more digestible.

BASF’s NutriDense traits will be combined with Monsanto’s Roundup Ready Genuity VT Triple PRO and Genuity SmartStax corn. The new high quality hybrids are expected to deliver the best feed value and yields equivalent to elite conventional corn. Once launched, seed companies will market the new hybrids through licensing agreements.

“The addition of higher yielding NutriDense corn hybrids from Monsanto plus increased distribution through Monsanto regional brands and other partners will allow animal operations to contract the planting of the enhanced nutrition corn across a broad geography,” said Jonathan Bryant, managing director of BASF Plant Science LP.

Corn growers may benefit from the premium pricing opportunity on the product from animal feed operations.

“We believe this collaboration will produce new and high-value hybrids for farmers by enabling them to deliver a more nutritious source of corn for feed use to their customers,” said Cameron Ator, regional brand lead for Monsanto. “This is another example of Monsanto’s efforts to continue to provide innovative products that can help farmers maximize the yield and profit potential on their farms.”

Roughly 45 percent of the corn grown in the United States is used as animal feed, with the majority being fed specifically to swine or poultry. A better nutritional composition of the grain fed to the animal reduces costs and waste. This development and commercialization agreement will benefit animal producers by offering a greater number of high yielding, high nutritional quality hybrids specifically designed for the swine, poultry, and dairy segment.

“BASF Plant Science has a strong commitment to the feed industry and our work in corn enhancement and animal nutrition is delivering better corn for better feed,” Bryant added. “We are the only company investing in this manner and depth to provide solutions that improve animal performance and help producers increase their profitability.”

Vomitoxins in Corn Grain

December 9th, 2009 by Courtney Beck

Vomitoxins, a metabolite that comes off mold in corn grain, is a familiar foe to swine producers.

“We’ve seen it in a number of places, and this year it seems to be a real hot topic in the central Indiana region,” said Jerry Weigel, manager of nutrition and technical services for BASF Plant Science. “A lot of people call it the ‘pig refusal’ factor because pigs will stay away from moldy stuff. This year we’ve seen levels so high that 200-pound pigs won’t touch it.”

There is some good news for swine producers though. Matthews Feed and Grain in Matthews, Ind. is reporting that the grain they are taking in from NutriDense Grain hybrids does not contain vomitoxins – a huge benefit to animal producers.

Leave a comment below if you’d like to receive more information on vomitoxins from the BASF Plant Science technical service team.

Ag Turning To Twitter Via AgChat

September 2nd, 2009 by kbodnar

Twitter is buzzword that is getting a lot attention in mainstream media, but how is it being used within the agriculture community? One way the agriculture industry is leveraging Twitter is through AgChat, a weekly discussion of agriculture related issues held on Twitter each Tuesday evening.

At Farm Progress 2009, I talked with Michele Payn-Knoper, who started AgChat to get the details about how AgChat works.

What is NutriDense?

August 24th, 2009 by Courtney Beck

We’ll talk a lot on this blog about NutriDense, a group of traits used in livestock feed. But what exactly is NutriDense? Here’s a quick overview to get us all on the same page.

Corn hybrids containing NutriDense traits, which improve the nutritional value of corn used for feeding livestock, can help corn farmers, dairy, hog and poultry producers increase the profitability of their operations.

NutriDense Corn Silage allows dairy producers to maintain milk production on less feed. Compared to other silage hybrids, NutriDense Silage has a higher protein level, which means producers purchase fewer feed additives. NutriDense Silage is also more digestible for the cows, so the cows receive a greater nutritional benefit and more energy from the feed.

Corn farmers and dairy, hog and poultry producers are all seeing the difference that NutriDense traits make. Click here to hear their stories.
